We can't be saved without believing in Christ, but unless God gives us faith to believe, we remain dead in our sins. Spiritually dead men cannot respond to God in faith.

Israel's story shows us that God's commands are good. But also that we can't obey them in our own strength.

Advent is well suited to grieving. The posture of waiting for the fulfillment of a promise matches the longing for the day when God will wipe away our tears. 

What matters more than having God on our side in our beliefs is knowing that He is on our side as our helper.
