But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children's children, ¹⁸to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments. ¹⁹The LORD has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. —Psalm 103:17-19
Throughout Psalm 103 David is reflecting on the character and benefits of the Lord, but in verses 14–16, he shifts his focus to man. During this shift we learn that man is finite and like grass when compared to the everlasting God. David continues to worship by returning his focus to the steadfast love of the Lord, the commandments of the Lord, and the kingdom of the Lord.
Everlasting Steadfast Love
When reflecting on the steadfast love of the Lord, David again makes the point that this love is extended to “those who fear him.” Not only is the Lord’s love described as steadfast, meaning that it is constant and unwavering, but it is also everlasting, meaning that it can be counted on for eternity. We see an echo of these truths in Mary’s Song of Praise, “And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation” (Luke 1:50). Wherever there is reflection on the everlasting steadfast love of the Lord, there is joy!
Remember to Do His Commandments
Throughout Psalm 103, wonderful things are promised to those who fear Him (vv. 11, 13, 17). What does it mean to fear the Lord? David gives us an answer in verse 18: those who fear the Lord are the ones who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments. The word of the Lord was not given to man in vain. It is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Those who fear the Lord are not merely hearers (or readers, or memorizers) of the word, but those who “remember to do his commandments.” Doers of the Word of the Lord can be confident that they are abiding in the everlasting steadfast love of the Lord (John 15:10).
His Kingdom Rules Over All
The Lord established his throne above every throne in the heavens and on earth, and His sovereign rule is over all. David begins to bring this psalm to a close by reflecting on the Lord’s rule over all things. No power or authority is outside of His dominion. Cherishing this glorious truth brings forth blessings and praise from David's heart, as it ought to do from us. The glorious King of the universe rules over all, and is worthy of all praise. His kingdom rules over all. Bless the Lord!
